Your tasks involve hacking into rival computer systems, stealing research data, sabotaging other companies, laundering money, erasing evidence, or framing innocent people. this is a problem that the actual hacking part of the game has, however. You play an Uplink Agent who makes a living by performing jobs for major corporations. theres no doubt that uplink is intended to be played over time, to continue when youre not around a computer but you end up spending a lot of time in its menus. its not that the missions are bad, you just get so much information about the people and places youre hacking that you end up feeling like youre not actually learning anything new from them. this makes it extremely difficult to go back to some of the missions from earlier on. to make things even worse, the later you start a mission, the less likely you are to get any money for it or to get a mission of the same type. each one has the same set of options, on top of the obvious option to accept or decline the mission. the game generates a list of possible missions and you must choose from those. uplink is a lot of fun but once youre past the mission selection screen and into the actual missions (which are randomly generated) you start getting into tedium. in fact, it can get to the point where youre just clicking away in an attempt to get more time to complete some mission. the bulk of the gameplay is spent on reading e-mails and browsing websites. Unfortunately, as with most hacking games, the hacking itself is not the most compelling part of uplink. uplink tells you how to do it but doesnt give you any explanation. if youre fast enough, you can get it as soon as the other person is out of the room. in this last case, if youre too slow and the asset is upgraded, it will be locked for you and youll have to wait for some time before you can go back to it. the former lets you go and discover additional mission objectives while the latter involves breaking into an asset that you can then sell (or use) to access other information. You play an Uplink Agent who makes a living by performing jobs for major corporations. the hacking parts consist of some inventory-based exploration and a couple of puzzles that happen in real-time. theres no doubt that some of the puzzles can be hard (the first one might be too hard for some people while the rest are easy and i had to change the order of the puzzle pieces on my screen to understand some of the puzzles) but it never feels unfair and the game knows when youre struggling with something and helps you out by offering hints or letting you replay a section. the result is a game that you play like the hacker you are and the story is never going to be a matter of sifting through pixels to decide what to do but rather a matter of deciding how you are going to play the game.
